Blow Into Fur, See Concentric Rings
Blow Into Fur, See Concentric Rings was a 2006 project that was initiated after I purchased a group of strange drawings from an antique store in Kingston, Ontario. After deciphering the signature on the drawings and calling several names in the phone book, I learned that they had been made by Dr. George Laverty, a professor emeritus of psychology at Queen's University. He lived 4 minutes away from me. I began to visit George regularly, learning about his incredible life (he was born in a mental asylum in the UK where his father was the head psychiatrist, he had researched the effects of alcohol addiction in skid row communities around the world, and had also been involved in research using LSD to treat various forms of addiction), and seeing the various parts of his amazing house (complete with an original Albrecht Dürer etching, a hand-painted psychedelic ceiling mural, and a homemade Tibetan boulder in the backyard).
The final project is designed to resemble an archival folio, 8 of which were produced. It includes:
- 1 screenprinted folio
- 6 screenprinted reproductions of Mr. Laverty's drawings
- 1 sealed letter addressed to S. G. Laverty
- 1 "magic eye" mind/vision expansion card
- 3 birthday poems
- 1 experimental documentary entitled "Nelini Mhalve" with a silkscreened slipcase
- 1 "Dream of Escape" book addressing signs and symbols in Mr. Laverty's drawings
- 1 photocopied page from Mr. Laverty's self-published book
An edition of Blow Into Fur, See Concentric Rings is in the collection of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, Ontario.
